Initially minor vassals to the Ghaznavids and Seljuks, the Ghurids grew into a formidable imperial power under the dual leadership of Ghiyath al-Din and his brother Muhammad of Ghor (Mu’izz al-Din). At its peak around 1200 CE, the dynasty commanded a vast realm spanning modern Afghanistan, northeastern Iran, Pakistan, and northern India all the way to the Bengal delta. Renowned for architectural masterworks such as the Minaret of Jam, the Ghurids played a pivotal role in the history of South Asia by decisively defeating regional powers like the Chahamanas at the Second Battle of Tarain (1192). Following Muhammad of Ghor’s assassination in 1206, the empire rapidly succumbed to the expanding Khwarazmian Empire in the west, while in India, his former Turkic slave-general Qutb al-Din Aibak declared independence, laying the foundations for the Delhi Sultanate.

<img In 1149 the Ghaznavid ruler Bahram Shāh poisoned a local Ghūrid leader, Quṭb al-Dīn, who had taken refuge in the city of Ghazna after a family quarrel. In revenge, the Ghūrid chief ʿAlāʾ al-Dīn Ḥusayn sacked and burned the city of Ghazna and ended the Ghaznavids' rule. Although ʿAlāʾ al-Dīn was unable to hold Ghazna, his triumph enabled his nephews Ghiyāth al-Dīn and Muʿizz al-Dīn to retake the city in 1173 from the Oğuz Turkmen nomads who had ruled it since the fall of the Ghaznavids. Between 1173 and 1202 Ghiyāth, the senior Ghūrid leader and suzerain, and Muʿizz al-Dīn, his brother and loyal subordinate, raised Ghūrid power to its peak. Ghiyāth struggled with the Khwārezm-Shāh for control of the Seljuq Turks' former holdings in Khorāsān (in northeastern Iran). Ghiyāth occupied Herāt (in western Afghanistan) in 1176 and went on to establish control over most of Afghanistan, eastern Iran, and what is now Turkmenistan by 1200. Meanwhile, Muʿizz al-Dīn and his lieutenant, Quṭb al-Dīn Aybak, were establishing Ghūrid rule over northern India from the city of Multān in Sind to Gaur in Bengal. (See Muʿizz al-Dīn Muḥammad ibn Sām.) ... The Ghūrid empire proved short-lived, however. Ghiyāth died in 1202, and Muʿizz al-Dīn was assassinated in 1206. A confused struggle then ensued among the remaining Ghūrid leaders, and the Khwārezm-Shāh were able to take over the Ghūrids' empire in about 1215. ... Though the Ghūrids' empire was short-lived, Muʿizz al-Dīn's conquests laid the foundation for subsequent Muslim rule in India. The cooperative relationship between Ghiyāth al-Dīn and Muʿizz al-Dīn, free of jealousy, greatly contributed to their success and is unusual in Muslim dynastic annals. Ghaznavid dynasty, (977–1186 ce), dynasty of Turkic origin that ruled in Khorāsān (in northeastern Iran), Afghanistan, and northern India. The founder of the dynasty was Sebüktigin (ruled 977–997), a former Turkic slave who was recognized by the Sāmānids (an Iranian Muslim dynasty) as governor of Ghazna (modern Ghaznī, Afghanistan). As the Sāmānid dynasty weakened, Sebüktigin consolidated his position and expanded his domains as far as the Indian border. His son Maḥmūd (ruled 998–1030) continued the expansionist policy, and by 1005 the Sāmānid territories had been divided. The Oxus River (Amu Darya) formed the boundary between the two successor states to the Sāmānid empire, the Ghaznavids ruling in the west and the Qarakhanids in the east. ... Ghaznavid power reached its zenith during Maḥmūd's reign. He created an empire that stretched from the Oxus to the Indus valley and the Indian Ocean; in the west he captured (from the Būyids) the Iranian cities of Rayy and Hamadan. A devout Muslim, Maḥmūd reshaped the Ghaznavids from their pagan Turkic origins into an Islamic dynasty and expanded the frontiers of Islam. The Persian poet Ferdowsī (d. 1020) completed his epic Shāh-nāmeh (“Book of Kings”) at the court of Maḥmūd about 1010.","https://encrypted-tbn2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSeaFUR1wT9HXc5dvI8VvKktLTNdPQ6kxFvEXVvmbeSQwqfsC_Q0wMYQVeOOu68nSCVeHPLMUKACvjEtVc","Britannica","https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/faviconV2?url=https://www.britannica.com&client=AIM&size=128&type=FAVICON&fallback_opts=TYPE,SIZE,URL",[[1791623309391449,149001354,2570372468],null,null,null,null,[[2,0,0,19]]],null,"e00f0ddc-3127-415a-a1a1-7d4aef8cf658"]]--> by sacking Ghazni in 1150 and capturing Lahore in 1186.

Peak Rule: Under the co-ruling brothers Ghiyath al-Din Muhammad (who ruled the western territories) and Mu’izz al-Din Muhammad, also known as Muhammad of Ghor<!--TgQPHd|||[["https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muhammad_of_Ghor",null,null,[null,null,null,null,null,null,null,null,null,null,null,null,null,null,null,[{"1218":[16,null,null,null,[1]]}]],16,null,"Muhammad of Ghor - Wikipedia","Mu'izz al-Din Muhammad ibn Sam (Muhammad of Ghor; c.1144–15 March 1206): Ghurid ruler (1173–1206).
